Paediatric Eczema with Fungal Infection

Updated: Jul 16, 2022

28 Jun 2022 Can eczema appears with fungal infection? What kind of strategies should be used in dealing with this skin disorder? How can we completely eliminate the pathogenic fungi using aromatherapy?

Eczema is often a frustrating skin disorder. In paediatric perspective, it is quite commonly appeared with opportunistic fungal infection.

Conventionally, physicians in Hong Kong prescribe clotrimazole and steroids with or without antibiotics for treating such skin infection. Even you follow the regimen strictly, it often makes the condition much worsened due to the development of drug resistance like the photo below.

At first, I administered the prescribed clotrimazole, steroids and mupirocin to my daughter’s skin. Yet, as I said, the condition worsened and the wound keeps bleeding with serous discharge. In this case, I stopped using western medicine on my daughter. Instead, turned to my expertise - aromatherapy. You will noticed that the condition will be improving slowly, but the effect is sustainable.

I adopted tea tree essential oil with tamanu oil and neem and malacca seeds tea on my daughter. I used neem and malacca seeds tea to wash the affected area first to alter the pH of the skin and then applied tea tree diluted in tamanu oil. I repeated this regimen 3 - 4 times a day for around 3 months already. Now, the skin is almost healed.

Besides essential oil, I also allowed my daughter to take a small bite of vegan gummy with elderberry and geranium from iHerb.

Geranium can decrease the ergosterol content, which exist as an important component at fungal cell membrane for maintaining the function and integrity of membrane. The reduction can perturb the cellular integrity due to the disrupted homeostasis. The leakage of cations could also be observed as a landmark for disruption of cell membrane and can disturb the internal pH, denature membrane-associated proteins, nucleic acid, mitochondria, and peroxisomes causing the fungal cell to death.

4 active compounds in geranium were identified to have strong inhibition on different amino acid sites of ver-1 gene, which is for converting versicolorin A to dimethylsterigmatocystin.

  • Citronellyl formate (Val211, Ile255,Arg248, Leu246)

  • Isomenthone (Arg248, Leu246, Asn244, Ile255)

  • Menthone (Arg248, Leu246, Asn244, Gly250,Ile255)

  • Pyroquilon (Leu277)

This inhibition can hinder the synthesis of aflatoxin B1.

Besides, a significant reduction in the utilization of various carbon-sources could impact the fungal growth and aflatoxin B1 production negatively.

Apart from the above functions, researchers noted that geranium can promote mitosis in hepatocytes and aid in liver cell regeneration. Thus, the anti-oxidative function could be enhanced.
