Musculoskeletal Injury

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

7 Jun 2022 Why even I went for aromatherapy sessions for many times, my injury still could not be reversed? Are there any oils exceptionally effective for soothing muscle pain? Can the injury be completely reversed?

For musculoskeletal injury, Miss Lily often classify them into “OLD“ and “NEW”. Old injury usually needs more sessions in order to restore the tension and function of the affected muscle groups. Whereas new injury, it usually takes 3 - 5 sessions for complete recovery. But of course, other than massage therapy, the patients will also need to comply to the recommendations given by the aromatherapist for maintaining the post-massage effect.

Choices of Essential Oils

Although IFA protocol does not recommend aromatherapists to use turmeric, it is a very much effective essential oil for musculoskeletal injury. And Miss Lily always loves to add it together with black pepper into the blend.

Turmeric has high content of curcuminoids, including, curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin…etc.. Curcumin was found to have impact on delta and my opioid receptors to reduce nociception (pain sensation). Also it can modulate the production of inflammatory cytokines and exert comparable analgesic effect of a standard dose of acetaminophen in treating acute pain; thus, to reduce muscle soreness. By adding Black Pepper to the blend, the bioavailability of curcumin can be increased. A study stated that when curcumin is orally taken with piperine, a component in black pepper, its bioavailability boosted by 2000% at 45 minutes after co-administration.

On the other hand, both Rosemary ct. 1,8-cineole and Eucalyptus globulus, comprising of 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), has smooth muscle relaxation effect, which allows vasodilation to promote circulation at the affected areas.

Bergamot in this blend is typically for adjusting the smell of the blend. Plus, bergamottin is a very strong analgesic by activating mu-opioid receptors. The terpenes inside can also potentially help to enhance the penetration of materials through our skin.

To soothe our musculoskeletal pain and reverse the musculoskeletal injury, you may apply these oils for deep tissue massage. The earlier the intervention done after injury, the proper the massage technique is, the quicker the recovery process is. And of course, we need your contribution on performing stretching exercises routinely for better and speedy recovery.
